A Person of Inspiration: Devendra Banhart
Attributes
- Visual and musical artist. Unmoved by trend or fashion.
- Free thinker. Hippie ideals. Huge imagination. Interviews suggest he is completely in a world of his own.
- Complete aesthetic control over his musical releases, even when they're now on a large scale on a major label. His album art and packaging is all beautifully composed, both graphically and through use of lovely stock.
- Humble. Doesn't take his success for granted, in fact, to the opposite degree, he appears hugely modest and unsure of his work, however I've always sensed a slight quiet confidence.
- Incredibly sharp style. (Never to be underestimated).
I'm drawn to Banhart as an all round creative. I feel an affinity with any creative who is as stubborn and uncompromising as Banhart. To carve out a career on such primitive, naive art and music is to be admired in today's financial climate.
Communication
If I were to contact Banhart, I'd like to know:
- How his music influences his visual art.
- How his visual art influences his music.
- How to keep financially stable as an artist.
- Wether he worked in studios with other artists and if this was a good experience.
I would contact him by handwritten or typewritten letter. His work reflects a love of the handmade and a respect of his materials, often working on cartridge or watercolour paper.
As well as the thrill of conversing with a personal hero, I feel there would be a lot to learn on a creative level from Banhart. As well as the above, I'd be interested to hear his views on hard work over free flowing creativity, after all, he seems incredibly laid back for somebody who clearly never stops creating.
