Went to see the guys at MUSIC in Manchester this evening for a little portfolio review. They'd explained in the email that they currently weren't looking for interns but to get some face to face feedback is invaluable!
The meeting was really relaxed and we spent an hour just browsing my work and suggesting how it could improve and be worked on. As evidenced in all 4 of my meetings with various creatives, it's so good to get some constructive criticism on work that I've just assumed is finished but infact needs refining and pushing. Today was huge in that regard, with Dan loving my process but wanting to see much more by way of pushing projects to their limits.
We agreed that my Dashing Dentist sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of my other work and may not be suited to a portfolio now that I have enough work to fill that space. He suggested trying a format other than a book for the Dashing Dentist but I feel that as it was a family project, the book is the perfect medium to sit on the shelves of my extended family, as apposed to a print or something more self indulgent.
I love the work that MUSIC produce and perhaps the piece of work Dan was most interested in was my recent Secret 7 Acrylic Box which makes sense in the context of MUSIC working largely with sculpture and real world materials.
Anyway, It's great to meet people in the industry and I feel energised and focused on the task at hand, with some projects needing a second look and some needing to be put to one side. We left on the note of get in touch towards graduation to sort a placement! Exciting!
