I decided recently that it was time to get some real experience in a design workplace if I'm to be considered employable once I've graduated. I've kept an 'Intern' folder for a couple of years into which I've bookmarked studios that catch my eye and produce work in a similar vain to my output.
These are the studios, ranging from Leeds, York, Sheffield to London.

After reading a couple of submission guidelines from the Studio's contact pages, they all suggested PDF portfolios, which I've produced before but certainly needed to revamp with new work.
The new PDF looks much smarter and more professional than my previous attempt which was a little clunky. This is down to a change of format to Landscape, which allows more room for imagery. The colours and typefaces are reflected throughout the projects on show within the portfolio.
The portfolio follows a very structured grid which shows an understanding of Design Principles and is all round a neat package of work!
I sent these off to all of the studios and got a fair few responses. One studio were very pleasant, basically saying they don't currently have enough work to keep an intern busy but if something did come up, they'd be in touch. It's really nice to get any reply, be it positiive or negative.
A few more came in saying they weren't currently taking interns - fair enough.
Finally, a great studio in Sheffield got in touch to arrange an interview at their studio. I've to prepare a physical portfolio for this meeting which will just be a case of slightly modifying my current pdf - adding a few more images of said projects - and adding in the real results from some other projects - Newspaper, Gone Girl screen-print and Mechanical Drawing.
Like buses, another email popped up from a studio in York so the same applies ^ for this too. Very exciting times that show the power of spending a bit of time making a portfolio look great.
