OUGD602 / PPP3 / Alan Kitching Exhibit @ Somerset House

I was down in London for my interview with the Beautiful Meme and as it happened, Pick Me Up festival was on at Somerset House.

The main draw was a retrospective of the print work of Alan Kitching which lined the walls and tables of Somerset House. His work impresses me hugely, showing the power of creativity within the strict rules of letterpress type.

His compositions resonate not only because of how much painstaking attention must've gone into their creation but the immense use of colour and texture that the woodtype allows. You can see the progression in Alan's work, from his early, very composed and respectful compositions to the now wherein he appears to roll inks of numerous colours straight onto the wood-type, creating these incredible gradients and ghostly effects of where the roller once was.

His work inspires me to work at large scale and make big messages quickly. His colour choices are exceptional, the room a mass of bright mango yellows and oranges largely on white stock.
