OUGD602 / PPP3 / Trip to London / Interview With Beautiful Meme

Went down to London this week for an interview with The Beautiful Meme, a studio I've admired for a while! I was drawn to them for their copywriting skills as much as anything, with two poets amongst their ranks. Copy has made its way into more of my work this year, though I've always enjoyed some effective copy in my work (looking back to Get Inside Their Minds etc).

Going into the interview I'd edited my portfolio, adding in Hyperloop and In Depth whilst removing The Dashing Dentist. In addition I also took a copy of NEST and my recent Laura Farrall branding.

The interview went well, though I hadn't revised up on my own work as in previous interviews and this showed, with some of my rationales coming across as weak and at times made up.

Positives:
  • Loved the Michel Gondry piece
  • Loved In Depth (but wanted to see it implemented further - gifs etc.
  • Loved the process of Machine Drawn Articles but found the finished prints 'flat'
  • Laura Farrall's brand spot on (just needs photographing well).
Things to Work On:
  • Too many projects + things tacked on the end (even if they were good)
  • Hyperloop stood out like sore thumb - shows corporate side to work?
  • Extend EVERYTHING, make things bigger (if necessary)
  • Keep working on words, copy, text
As with my portfolio review at MUSIC, they were honest and so helpful, making me just want to do everything bigger and better. An extremely valuable experience.
