I have left interviews recently wishing I could've left a business card, something more permanent that represented me. In saying that, I left some of my prints at DUST the first time.
Business cards are definitely a funny one in our day and age, with much of the negotiation for placements done over email - where your email address basically does the job of reminding people that you're you. However as much of my work resides in print, I do feel it's appropriate for me to have a printed business card to hand out on a whim.
Anyway, the starting point of my card was seeing that Moo offer spot varnish at a very good price. I immediately imagines the varnish without a layer of ink below and how subtly nice that could look. The hint of shine can also be used in order to bring a sort of 'hidden joke' into the mix.
In terms of logo, the most apt for me has been at the top of my website for a while. I feel it's imperative for the card to wrap together with the website.
This word mark as just a spot gloss would get me past the embarrassment of just having my name on a business card... it's still a bit odd but oh well. The front of the card is black on black.
I then decided to play with the spot gloss on the back of the card, largely to get around having to put 'graphic designer' which I don't think quite sums me up but I have no other alternative! My way around this was to print a small gloss question mark after 'Graphic Design', both asking the question of someone who needs a graphic designer and bringing into question the relevance of that title to my practice.
In addition, I just went with my url and email address. Less cluttered and the only ways in which people should have to contact me anywho.
I'm now waiting for delivery and hopefully the print finish and stock is great!
