OUGD602 / PPP3 / Talk / Bruno Ceschel - 'Self Publish, Be Happy'

Went to a talk the other day at uni and arranged by the guys from Village bookstore. The speaker was Bruno Ceschel, widely known for championing self publishing and his imprint Self Publish, Be Happy.

I was interested in seeing Bruno talk mainly to gain a perspective on an industry that continues to defy the digital age and push forward with print and that love of all things tangible.

It was an interesting talk, with Bruno running us through his favourite examples from his book (Self-publish, be happy) and explaining the power of self-publishing in different contexts around the world. For example, one publication, Nude, published in China would have legally destroyed any large publishing house and so self-publishing became the only viable option. It is that anonymity that seems to create the most exciting work.

Bruno also touched on his love of the 'industry' as one that creates collectibles and forges infamous heroes such as Alec Soth who produced Songbook, a look at American Communities through his b+w lens.

I'm very much separate from this 'scene' and struggle to get excited about piles of Zines in shops - largely due to their oft aloof and vague conceptions / narratives but I could see why Bruno has devoted his life to this love and it has made me want to search out photographers to work with and produce limited, beautiful publications & objects.
