OUGD602 / PPP3 / Leeds Print Fest Talks

Went to the Leeds Print Festival last week, mainly to see Alan Kitching talk about his letterpress work! It was an eclectic selection of speakers...

Ian Anderson from The Designers Republic started the day off by running through an A-Z of his studio. The most interesting and successful project he talked through was his fantastic work for Aphex Twin's Syro which stripped away the whole idea of a record and essentially gave us  a beautifully designed receipt as album sleeve!

Next up was Danny Leigh, a film journalist with an immense knowledge of film posters. He gave us a brief history of the film poster and how film advertising has shifted and changed (not always for the best) over the years! A wonderful, informative talk and everyone seemed to go away with a new list of films to go and see. I'd seen Saul  Bass's work before but never had them explained in such a way and in this context.

Finally, Alan Kitching was up and talked us through his career in printing! It was good to hear anecdotes from the horse's mouth after a few months of watching interviews / reading up on him etc.  It was a shame he didn't bring any prints along with him but to see his working process was invaluable. One interesting point I would make is that he never waxed lyrical about print as a thing, seeing it more as a means to an end...

For a print talk, there was a distinct absence of a true love and fetishisation of the medium that I was kind of hoping for - maybe everyone's just bored of discussing if print's dead when it clearly isn't and never will be!
