PPP / Alec Dudson - 'Intern' Magazine Talk & SheWasOnly Studio

Myself and Daria went along to the talk for third years from Alec Dudson about the conception of Intern Magazine.

It was a great opportunity to see how a fledgling and very interesting magazine has come to be in a very competitive market. Alec spent 2 months in Milan and 7 months at Boat magazine in London as an unpaid intern and took this experience with him into an as yet unexplored field in the magazine sphere.

The idea of the magazine - to showcase intern's work, both creative and editorial - is compelling and Alec wants the publication to kickstart a more respectful attitude towards interns in all fields.

He also talked about the conception of the magazine through crowdsourcing on Kickstarter and how this has given him and his team much more creative control over the project.

Another notable quirk in Intern's way of doing things is their approach to advertising, using only suitable companies and then redesigning the ads into their house style to avoid an influx of wildly different imagery.

SheWasOnly

Alec discussed the studio he'd worked with for the design of the magazine, SheWasOnly. They sounded like a small collective, which always interests me. The magazine is stunningly executed. Stylish yet self aware.

'She Was Only is an independent design studio in London. Devoted to simplicity, we create intelligent and exciting visual communication that shows ambition and insight.'

They were also behind the art direction of Boat Magazine - in which Alec interned earlier in his career. It highlighted the importance of making contacts - however tenuous - that could help you out in the distant future!
